Testimonials

As a young child I was taken to church every week, sometimes three times on Sundays including Sunday school. I always enjoyed attending church even though I found the sermons boring due to lack of understanding. However, I managed to while away the time by discreetly making rabbits and crackers out of handkerchiefs! In retrospect I suppose I went to church out of habit but now I am grateful for that experience.

As time progressed and I started married life in Driffield, I attended All Saints Church and later St. Mary’s Church, Little Driffield. I must admit that even by this time, although I could recite the Creed, Magnificat etc. I was not an avid reader of the bible and my knowledge was very basic.

It was after the morning service one Sunday that the vicar at that time invited me to join a home group. I was more than a little apprehensive but at the same time I was curious. I eventually accepted the invitation on condition that I would not be asked any questions! As the weeks passed, I realised how shallow my knowledge of God really was and I wanted to read the bible more and more as well as read other Christian books. I hadn’t realised that God knows each one of us by name and has a personal relationship with each of us. Not being a confident person, this made a real impact and helped me with my work and life generally.

It was whilst I was at St. Mary’s that the organist was on holiday and arrangements had not been made for a replacement. When members of the congregation were asked if anyone could play, all was quiet and no one responded. I felt so guilty not saying anything that I decided I had to volunteer. Lo and behold, I am still there today but playing a beautiful new electric organ with so many knobs and buttons it is sometimes “pot luck” which sound will be produced. However, I really enjoy playing at the services and the congregation sing heartily. I try to make the music “speak” to the congregation in order to encourage a time of reflection at the beginning of each service and a feeling of praise at the end. Music plays such an important role in worship and I feel privileged to have been asked to do my "bit".

You won’t find me making rabbits or crackers anymore because the sermons, reading, prayers and singing are all too good to miss.

Why do I go to church?

Because there are lots of good looking lads?? NO
Because there are biscuits at the end of the service?? NO
Because I want to be in the prescence of God?? YES

The atmosphere in church is like one big family where you can't help but feel welcome and you can't help but smile!!

The church offers a great 3:16 group, where children of all ages can come and have fun whilst learning about and worshipping God! Not only on a Sunday morning, but on other days too, we have lots of activities going on e.g the Fun Day, trips to Big fun, Driff show, BBQs etc.

Victoria

We began worshipping at All Saints’ Church over thirty years ago, shortly after moving to the town. In those days we attended with our two young children; now we come with our grandson. It is a joy and a privilege to attend church Sunday by Sunday and to praise the Lord for all that he has done for us. We value the worship, the teaching and the fellowship at All Saints’. In contrast to its formal and sombre Victorian appearance, the church is lively and friendly. There is a variety of services: we enjoy both the warmth of the more formal morning service and the freer worship of the informal evening service; and occasionally we attend the beautiful little church of St. Mary’s which has its own very special atmosphere. Sometimes, during a service, there is the opportunity for those who want healing to go forward for prayer and anointing, a blessing of which we have personal experience. The healing power of Jesus is the same today as it was in New Testament times. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. (Hebrews 13 v. 8)

I like going to church with my dad and my grandparents because it is lots of fun. I enjoy meeting my friends there; we do lots of activities and have games that we play. I also enjoy the church services and love the singing and the worship. Last summer I was baptised and confirmed, and during the service I led the intercessions. Church is great. Why don’t you come along?

Ben (aged 14)

I moved to Driffield about 4 years ago and finding a church was quite a priority for me. I went to All Saints to see what it was like and was made to feel so welcome that I went back again. I was amazed- so many people greeted me by name! I was new to the town and knew hardly anyone, so you can imagine what a wonderful experience this was for me.

I began to attend regularly, meeting more people and struggling to remember so many new names! I quickly began to feel like a part of the church community in Driffield. I began attending a house group and enjoyed the chance to explore my faith more deeply than I had in a long time.

I now lead one of the home groups and really value the time I spend with Christian friends. I have also been given the opportunity to speak in church a few times; something I have found to be an exciting, if somewhat nerve-wracking challenge! I have also become a registered fair trader and run the church’s Traidcraft stall.

One of the great things about being a member of the church community in Driffield is Churches Together. I feel very blessed to live in an area where all of the churches work closely together; the emphasis is on our shared faith, rather than denominational differences. It is wonderful to feel part a wider Christian community and commend the vision of all of our church leaders for this.

I used to be quite happy going along to church when I felt like it and when I had nothing better to do, but now I don’t feel I have anything better to do on a Sunday morning. I go to All Saints church because I want to. The services are sometimes challenging, sometimes moving, and often thought provoking. The people are warm and welcoming and there are often really good biscuits too!
